Last Sunday, for the first time in my entire life, I went to a 4×4 truck challenge. Wow, was I missing out on a lot of fun. As part of things to do while in San Pedro Sula, you should seriously consider going to watch these modified marvels.
From the moment the race starts, the cars have to go through a series of obstacles that range from huge rocks to very deep holes. It is amazing to watch how these drivers put their cars through the paces. And the cars! Oh the cars are incredible! Someone was telling me that the driver`s biggest pride is to modify the cars themselves. Suspension, brakes, tires and weird gadgets, all serve the higher purpose of surviving the track.
It is great to see the different types of cars and drivers. Some drivers are careful and go through the obstacles at a decent pace, and other drivers are just insane, they zoom through the obstacles, trying to fly over them (although I tell them that they have cars NOT jets) and end up stuck at one of the holes. It is when this happens that the mighty backhoe has to be sent in to save the day. Imagine, they actually have a backhoe parked at the track. only for the purpose of helping the cars that are stuck. If that isn`t cool then I have lost my coolness meter somewhere.
This event goes on every Saturday and it is about a 25 minute drive from the Hotel San Juan. There is no entry fee unless Club Merendon is having a formal competition, in which case the entry fee is $2.50. There are no restrictions about who can go and watch, so it`s perfect for the whole family. Remember to take your camera, so you can take a picture with your favorite car.
